Transforming and Resolving
Conflict
Conflict is often painful and
most of us would prefer to avoid it, even to the point of
denial. Yet we are repeatedly drawn into it, sometimes with
disastrous consequences. However, conflict is an integral and
natural part of our lives, which we all experience, internally
and externally, many times a day to varying degrees. The
natural laws encompassing our physical world, including the
planetary system, the animal and plant kingdoms, clearly
demonstrates the truth of this. The forces of gravity,
territory/food syndromes for which species fight each other,
are examples.
The common factor in all
conflicts is tension whether it is a small and internal one
like “What shall I wear tonight?”… “Which film shall we see?”,
through to the large external and even international conflict,
such as “This is my land.”. Every conflict produces a
tension; a two-way pull/or push between two opposing needs at
the same time. Tension is a natural ‘building block’ of the
physical world. For example, without the correct calculation
of tensions buildings would collapse under gravitational
pull.
Sadly, most of us regard
conflict negatively because of the destructive results we have
experienced and witnessed. We fear the outfall of such
situations because of the bitterness, pain and violence, which
it frequently produces.
However, we can choose to
perceive and treat a dispute as a positive energy, a dance of
communication and a creative opportunity in which the needs of
self and others can be listened to and explored. The
challenge to each individual and to society collectively is to
find ways to harness the energies and opportunities that
conflict represents and to be constructive, not destructive.

Transforming and Resolving Conflict
provides the opportunity to apply simple, effective tools that
facilitate the flow of information necessary to resolve
differences compassionately and is applicable in educational
institutions, industrial organisations, social service
agencies, political situations and families.
Transforming and Resolving Conflict
provides a means for influencing people that increases
goodwill and avoids resentment. It emphasises compassion as
the motivation for our actions, rather than fear, guilt or
shame. It also emphasises personal responsibility for our
choices.
Skills strengthened by
Transforming and Resolving Conflict include the ability to
make clear observations, without evaluation, about what is in
conflict with our values; the ability to assertively request
co-operation without demanding and the ability to understand
respectfully the feelings and needs expressed in messages,
regardless of their form.
